With NBA playoff season under way and fans routing for their favorite team and for their favorite couple to kiss on candid camera (Kylie and Travis Scott), the pressure is on. And with all that pressure, it’s important for teams to operate in unison on and in this case off the court.
This past Friday, LeBron James and the Cavaliers suited up for their game against the Indiana Pacers, not in basketball gear, but in custom Thom Browne suits. The team entered the stadium in unison wearing Thom Browne’s “grey Super 120s twill suit along with a white oxford shirt, tie, 4-bar cashmere cardigan, Chesterfield overcoat, black pebble grain leather brogue boot and Mr. Thom bag.” An outfit estimated at $45k plus, with the “Mr.Thom Bag” the priciest piece at $41K. Wow!
The players wore the custom suits as a symbol of team unity. In today’s world, managing editor for The Ringer says “It’s so much easier to feel like you know a basketball player than it is to feel like you know a baseball player, in concert with the league and through their own brute force, they have carved out a niche where they are legit celebrities and they are their own brand.”
However, going into the playoff series, it was important for this element of individuality to transform into a team effort and Thom Browne, whose team is known for wearing “uniform,” was the perfect designer for the occasion.
Browne says on the collab, “...this initiative with the cavaliers is a cultural statement that speaks to the confidence and power of uniformity...lebron and each one of his teammates is a true individual...and this individuality is heightened by the confidence they show in representing this unique, strong, singular message...”
LeBron James, the Cavaliers MVP, thanked former teammate, Dwayne Wade, for bringing the collab into fruition before he returned back to his home team, Miami Heat. James said the idea represents “camaraderie, solidarity, brotherhood, It definitely creates a feeling like we are one.”
Although the team members, including their coach, wore the exact same $2,590 suit, each suit was individually tailored to each player’s size. So, add another $3,500 - $4,800 on top of that for customization. Now that’s what you call commitment.
LeBron and team may have lost the game but they def came and went in style. Catch them rocking the custom suits throughout the rest of playoff season.
