Vanessa Williams

Vanessa Williams is a singer, actress and the first African-American to be crowned Miss America, in 1983. Though Williams famously lost her crown as a result of a nude picture scandal, she rebounded by focusing on music. Her 1988 debut album, The Right Stuff, earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. She went on to star in the Broadway production of Kiss of the Spider Woman. Outside of stage and film, she has been successful as a TV actor, playing neighbor Renee Perry on Desperate Housewives and receiving three Emmy nominations for her work on the ABC comedy Ugly Betty.
