Celebrated Singer Jubilant Sykes Killed, Son in Custody

Authorities said the stabbing appeared to be a domestic incident, while Sykes’ son Micah has been named a suspect.

Grammy-nominated opera baritone Jubilant Sykes was found fatally stabbed in his Santa Monica home, police said Tuesday. Authorities discovered the 71-year-old singer with multiple stab wounds after responding to an assault in progress. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Sykes’ 31-year-old son, Micah, “was found inside the residence and taken into custody without incident,” the Santa Monica Police Department said. He had been booked on suspicion of homicide and is being held in lieu of a $2,000,000 bail, according to jail records. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will now review the investigation to determine whether formal charges will be filed. Police described the stabbing as a domestic incident and said there was “no ongoing threat to the community.”

A respected figure in classical music, Sykes earned a Grammy nomination for his 2009 recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass and performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center over the decades. His roster of collaborators included Julie Andrews, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, and Brian Wilson. Colleagues and arts organizations have begun posting tributes as the news of his death spreads.

Details remain under investigation and the DA’s review means formal charging decisions could come as the probe continues. Friends and fans have described Sykes as a powerful voice in American classical and crossover music, and the loss has reverberated through the performing arts community.
