'The Ms. Pat Show:' ICE, the President, and a House Full of Tension
This week's episode of The Ms. Pat Show leans directly into the current political climate. Terry tells the family the U.S. president wants to get back in unions’ good graces and plans to do it by having dinner with a union member’s family. Terry’s union selects him and his chaotic household as the perfect representatives. He isn’t thrilled, but he feels stuck. When he shares the news, everyone is shocked and clearly not fans of the president. Janelle, who’s visiting, even calls him a dictator. Eventually it becomes clear the show is referencing Trump, though they never say his name. The president is coming that night and they have to prepare. Terry is nervous because he knows his family can’t exactly behave.
The first complication arrives when Brandon shows up with one of his students, a Latino boy named Miguel from his gaming and programming class. Brandon believes Miguel will be safe at their house because ICE just picked up his parents and he’s terrified. Once the family understands the situation, they try to get Miguel somewhere safer, but it’s too late. Secret Service agents are already outside.
Miguel isn’t undocumented, but he’s understandably afraid. The tension rises when agents enter and say they need to interview everyone before the president arrives. Miguel hides in Janelle’s room while interviews happen in the kitchen. Unfortunately, the agents notice him running upstairs and ask him to come down. When he does, the lead agent assumes Miguel is Terry’s nephew, “Tyrone.”
Things turn comedic when Pat claims Tyrone is mute and that the family communicates with him through a tapping language. Miguel quickly plays along, nervously tapping on the table. The moment is interrupted when the president requests McDonald’s, forcing the agents to leave temporarily but promising to return.
We learn Miguel’s parents have been waiting 13 years for citizenship, the same amount of time he’s been alive, highlighting how difficult and slow the process can be. Pat’s family does their best to comfort him and keep him calm. Terry, deeply bothered by what the boy is going through, ultimately calls off the dinner despite potential consequences at work. He refuses to let the president use his home as a press opportunity.
By the end, Miguel’s aunt arrives ready to prove his citizenship and keep him safe. The episode closes with a clear message: Black and brown communities should stand together.
