Deion Patterson: What We Know So Far About The Accused Atlanta Shooter

At least one person died and four others were wounded at the hospital mass shooting, but mental illness is said to have played a role.

The man accused of fatally shooting one woman and wounding four others inside an Atlanta hospital is slated for his first court appearance in Fulton County Magistrate Court on Thursday (May 4), local station WANF reports.

On Wednesday (May 3), law enforcement officials launched a manhunt for Deion Patterson, 24, after the shooting. Police arrested him hours later at a condominium complex in nearby Cobb County, Ga., without incident. He was booked into the Fulton County Jail on charges of murder and aggravated assault.

After apologizing to the victims, Patterson’s mother, Minyone Patterson, told WANF that her son suffers from mental illness.

“This mental illness is real, and when we say it’s real, from the medical standpoint, it is real,” Minyone Patterson said. “And when someone is saying they need help, or you see that they are acting out of sorts, they need help. Help them, just don’t disregard them. They need help, and as I’m trying to advocate for my son he was turned away. Just be careful.”

In a call with The Daily Beast, Minyone Patterson stated that her son was on medication, saying, “The damn VA gave him some messed up medication. And all he wanted was an Ativan,” before hanging up the phone.

The U.S. Coast Guard issued this widely reported statement during the manhunt:

“Our deepest sympathies are with the victims and their families. The Coast Guard Investigative Service is working closely with the Atlanta Police Department and local authorities in the investigation. Mr. Patterson entered the Coast Guard in July 2018 and last served as an Electrician’s Mate Second Class.”

Patterson was discharged from active duty in January, according to Atlanta public radio station WABE. But the circumstances surrounding his discharge were not immediately known.

Patterson has multiple prior arrests, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Records from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia show that he was arrested in 2015 on a marijuana possession charge and arrested twice in 2017 on charges of probation violation.

Clayton County, Ga., court records show that he was charged in 2017 with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a crash, improper lane change and not having insurance.

In 2020, Patterson was cited in Missouri for three separate traffic violations in Saint Louis County and Phelps County.

Around midday on May 3, Patterson was inside Atlanta’s Northside Hospital when he became agitated while waiting for an appointment, CBS News reported. Investigators allege that he pulled out a handgun and opened fire.

After leaving the building, Patterson allegedly stole an unattended truck at a nearby gas station and drove off, the police said. A license plate-reading camera alerted police of the vehicle’s whereabouts. After that, a 911 dispatcher received a tip and alerted the police about his approximate location. An undercover officer spotted Patterson and called for backup.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified the deceased woman as Amy St. Pierre, a 39-year-old CDC employee. Meanwhile, the four wounded victims, all women ranging in age from 25 to 71, were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Three of them were listed Wednesday night in critical condition and the fourth was in stable condition.
