Box Office: Transformers Defeats Tammy for Top Spot

Age of Extinction grosses $36.4 million over holiday weekend.

Transformers: Age of Extinction trumped Tammy, easily winning the Fourth of July box office. The mega-budget action film, starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Michael Bay, grossed $36.4 million over the weekend. Its worldwide total currently stands at an astounding $575.6 million in just ten days.

Melissa McCarthy‘s new comedy Tammy came in a distant second with $21 million for the three-day weekend and $32.9 million across the five day holiday. The comedy wunderkind's latest offering was met with dismal reviews.

Rounding out the top five were the new horror movie Deliver Us From Evil with $9.5 million, holdover 22 Jump Street — starring Channing TatumJonah Hill and Ice Cube — with $9.4 million, and the animated flick How to Train Your Dragon 2 with $8.75 million.
Next week, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will attempt to take the wind of out Transformer's sails, while Ron Howard's Jay Z documentary Made in America will give music fans a reason to head to the movies.
