Burna Boy Covers Funerals for Stockton Shooting Victims
When a children’s birthday party in Stockton, California ended in tragedy on Nov. 29, the city was left reeling. Gunfire inside a banquet hall killed four young people, including three children, and left 11 others wounded. The shocking violence shattered multiple families and inspired an outpouring of local vigils and fundraisers as residents scrambled to support the grieving households.
Moved by the reports, international star Burna Boy stepped in to relieve one urgent burden facing the families: funeral costs. The Grammy-winning artist said he first heard about the mass shooting while listening to “The Breakfast Club” and offered to fully cover services for all four victims.
Burna Boy singled out the story of Amari, a 14-year-old student and athlete with a 3.8 GPA whose life and plan for college touched him deeply. In a statement, he said, “When I heard about the children murdered in Stockton, my heart broke. After hearing the story on The Breakfast Club, I reached out to Wack 100 and connected with Jason Lee because no family should ever face this kind of pain alone. I wanted to do whatever I could to support these parents as they begin the long process of healing.”
Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee has been meeting with the victims’ families and thanked Burna Boy for his kind gesture, calling it an example of global solidarity, saying the community needs every hand it can get right now. Local leaders continue investigating the attack and said it was apparently targeted. No arrests have been announced.
In the wake of a horror that left a city in mourning, Burna Boy’s kind act is a powerful attempt at helping these grieving families.
