The co-founder of Murder Inc. Records passed away on Wednesday (Feb. 5) at the age of 54. Gotti, born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., had been battling multiple health challenges over the years, including a stroke, and was rumored to have been placed on life support before his passing although an official cause of death has yet to be determined.

“Def Jam Recordings and the extended Def Jam family of artists, executives, and employees, are deeply saddened at the loss of Irv Gotti,” the label posted on Instagram. “His creative genius and unwavering dedication to the culture birthed countless hits, defining an era of music that continues to resonate with fans worldwide. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his work.”
His longtime collaborator and friend Ja Rule responded to the heartbreaking news with a simple yet powerful message, posting a broken heart emoji on X.
Other industry figures paid their respects, including Hot 97 and Apple Music host Ebro Darden, who wrote on Instagram, “Loved music. Loved HipHop. He was loved. Thank you for your service. #RIPIrvGotti.”
Media personality Marc Lamont Hill echoed the sentiment, tweeting, “Rest in Peace, Irv Gotti. We're losing our legends too soon!!!”
