Baby Keem Thanks ‘The Women Who Shaped Me’ When Winning GRAMMY Award For Best Rap Performance

He shares the award with his cousin, Kendrick Lamar for their joint project "family ties".

Marking his first Grammy win, Las Vegas native  Baby Keem took home the award for “Best Rap Performance” for his song, “family ties” featuring his cousin and collaborator Kendrick Lamar. The 21-year-old artist was also nominated for Best New Artist, Best Album, and Best Rap Song.

Three-time Grammy award winning rapper Ludacris announced the nominees for Best Rap Performance and handed Baby Keem his award in a moment that was really about one generation handing the rap reins to the next.

“Nothing can prepare me for this moment tonight,” Bbay Keem said in a humbling acceptance speech. “I want to say thank you to my support system, the city of Las Vegas, my family, the women that raised me, to shape me to become the man I am today.”

He went on to also thank the men and women of his team that helped to bring all aspects of his career together behind the scenes. Most poignantly, Keem (born Hykeem Jamaal Carter Jr.) gave a shout out to Lamar among other artists who have helped him along the way.

Keem gained major recognition for his single, “Orange Soda” from his second mixtape “Die for My Bitch” in 2019. He also made waves after collaborating with big names like Travis Scott and Kanye West. In fact, his co-written feature on West’s Donda track “Praise God” led to his Grammy nom for Album of the Year.
