An elderly Black woman’s death after a confrontation inside a Tim Hortons in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has sparked outrage from her family and renewed questions about how police handled the case.

Video released after the incident appears to show a physical clash between 75-year-old Anita Grayson and a younger employee, but investigators say the coroner has not yet determined an official cause of death.​

According to WPTA, Grayson entered the restaurant on May 13 to complain about an order from the drive-thru. An argument then erupted between Grayson and the teenage employee behind the counter.

A 20-year-old shift lead stepped in, and the exchange quickly escalated into a scuffle. Police said Grayson became unresponsive before officers could fully interact with her, and medics later pronounced her dead after she was taken to the hospital.

News of the incident spread fast online after surveillance footage surfaced (see below), prompting intense reaction from Grayson’s family and viewers who said the video showed the worker should have been arrested.

“My mother was wronged in the worst way,” her daughter, Tawnda Grayson, said to WPTA. “I lost the matriarch of my family.”

“You should not enter a coffee shop for a coffee and a doughnut and come out unalived,” she added. “That is diabolical.”

Fort Wayne police said detectives interviewed witnesses, gathered evidence, and reviewed the footage, then turned the case over for prosecutorial review. The Allen County coroner’s office said Grayson’s cause and manner of death remained pending, and its initial findings noted no significant contributory injuries.

“We were deeply saddened to learn about this incident and our heartfelt condolences go out to the loved ones of Anita Grayson,” said a representative from Tim Horton’s per WANE. “The health and safety of our guests and team members is our highest priority and the local franchisee is cooperating fully with the police’s investigation. As the investigation is ongoing, we have no further comment.”

For Grayson’s relatives, the central question is whether the confrontation was handled appropriately before it ended in tragedy​.

The case is reportedly still under investigation.
