Wiz Khalifa Hit With 9-Month Romanian Jail Sentence
Rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in jail by a Romanian court on drug possession charges, more than a year after he lit up onstage at a local music festival. The decision, handed down Thursday by the Constanta Court of Appeal, is final under Romanian law.
The Associated Press (AP) reports that Prosecutors say police stopped the 38-year-old “Multiverse” artist in July 2024 after allegedly smoking cannabis during his set at the Beach, Please! festival in Costinești, a coastal resort on the Black Sea.
Authorities reported he was carrying roughly 18 grams of cannabis and had already consumed some on stage.
During the Costinești performance, which sparked the case, he was seen smoking a large, hand‑rolled cigarette while performing his anthem about partying and freedom.
Soon after, he apologized on X:
“Didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time,” he shared.
A lower court had previously issued Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, a criminal fine of 3,600 lei (about $830) for illegal possession of dangerous drugs.
Still, prosecutors appealed and pushed for a tougher outcome. The appeals court ultimately convicted him of “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption” and upgraded the penalty to a harsher sentence.
Romania’s drug laws are strict compared to most Western countries; even personal cannabis possession is a crime that can bring three months to two years in prison or a fine.
It is not yet clear whether Romanian officials will try to have “Young, Wild & Free” rapper extradited from the United States.
