Detroit 'Teacher Of The Month' Fired For Having A Rap Career

Domonique Brown, aka Drippin Honey, is loved by students and parents but was called a bad influence on the students by the administration.

How does an educator go from "Teacher of the Month" to fired? It's a side hustle gone wrong. Metro Detroit U.S. history teacher Domonique Brown was fired from her Taylor Preparatory High School job in October 2023 after a student’s parent became aware of Brown’s rap career, according to Fox2Detroit. When Brown wasn’t doing her day job as a teacher, she pursued a rap career under the moniker Drippin Honey.

Brown wrote under her music video on YouTube, "My outside life should not be grounds for termination when it does not interfere with my ability to fulfill my responsibilities as a teacher. My dedication, professionalism, and passion for education have always been unwavering, regardless of any personal pursuits I may have."

Brown has been an educator for seven years. She’s also pursuing her master’s degree, plans to continue educating herself, and wants to get a doctorate. Since Brown’s rap career came to the attention of the institution she teaches for, she’s spent months defending her career.

Despite Detroit being a musical city, Taylor Prep’s powers that be don’t see it for Brown and her rap career while teaching. "The first meeting was with my dean and my principal and they were just telling me, ‘Hey, a parent said that they’ve seen your social media, and that you’re a bad influence because you’re a rapper,'" Brown said.

Brown believes she is being discriminated against. She’s continuously asked for the complaint against her in writing to no avail. She requested that the complaining parent visit her in the classroom to see how professional and exceptional she is at her job and how she goes above and beyond for her kids, even buying them food when needed.

Brown said, "If I was a horrible teacher, y’all would have dropped me the day it was a problem.”

Her former students love Brown. In fact, after she was fired, she filmed a video for her song “Dripping 101,” and several of the students were featured in the video.
