Lizzo Reveals the Key Changes That Helped Her Lose Weight and Heal Her Anxiety

From cutting out Starbucks to practicing mindful isolation, the star explains how she’s prioritizing her health, inside and out.

Lizzo is pulling back the curtain on the personal changes that helped her lose weight, ditch anxiety, and take back control of her life.

During a TikTok Live on Tuesday (April 22), captured by PEOPLE, the 36-year-old artist shared details about her health journey, revealing that she’s been on a mindful mission since 2023 to feel better both physically and mentally.

In January, the Grammy winner told fans that she had lowered her body mass index by 10.5 and reduced her body fat by 16%.

The singer credited the results to being intentional about what she puts on her plate and chooses to skip. “I do something sweet. It’s gotta be with some sort of like carb. I’ll have like almond butter and toast,” she explained, noting she avoids “sugary stuff” in the morning.

While emphasizing that every body is different, Lizzo added that the science behind weight loss comes down to one simple concept: “calories in versus calories out.” “That’s just how the human body works,” she added.

One major switch-up for the “About Damn Time” singer was cutting out Starbucks—a decision the star said surprised ever her.

Lizzo admitted she used to drink “two to three” large Starbucks drinks daily, not realizing she was consuming up to 1,200 calories just from coffee. “I stopped drinking coffee to help regulate my nervous system,” she shared, adding that she began applying a calorie deficit after recognizing her tendency to binge.

Though she clarified she’s not a fan of strict calorie counting, Lizzo said she uses it as “a tool to fight against the American food system.”

However, the “Truth Hurts” singer shared that her health journey hasn’t just been about numbers on a scale. Lizzo also opened up about the emotional work it’s taken to manage her anxiety.

“I’ve been working to get my anxiety under control for years,” she said. “I decided that I want to release, and I’m ready to stop waiting to be myself fully — and be happy.”

Through mindful isolation, meditation, and learning to sit with herself rather than run from discomfort, Lizzo says she finally feels lighter, “energetically and emotionally.”
