These White Sorority Girls Are Getting Slammed For This Snapchat Of Them Holding A Banana With The Caption 'I'm 1/16 Black"

The GW Alpha Phi chapter is in the process of terminating the girls' membership.

Three sorority girls from George Washington University have been removed from their chapter after a racially insensitive photo was posted to Snapchat.

On Wednesday, a picture was shared on Snapchat showing two white women in the Alpha Phi sorority house holding up a peeled banana with the caption "Izzy: 'I'm 1/16 black.'" Someone else in the sorority posted the photo, and a screen shot was taken and shared to other social media platforms, reported the Washington Post.

Imani Ross, a student at George Washington University and a senator for the Student Association, tweeted a photo of the image.

  • Along with the image, Ross tweeted "This is the eve of Black History Month @GWtweets @GWPeterK care to explain," tagging the GWU administration

  • Immediately, Ross' tweet was met by a message of concern by the university

George Washington University Provost Forrest Maltzman said the university has been in “active dialogue” with a sorority’s national headquarters in regard to the “entirely inappropriate posting” which was shared to social media.

"As a university, we have emphasized our commitment to inclusion and have made clear that 'You are Welcome Here.' We do this through our actions and our words. Images like the one posted on social media can make people question whether they are welcome at the university, and that is unacceptable to me," Maltzman said in a statement to USA TODAY.

  • As demands for action to be taken intensified, the GW Alpha Phi chapter announced the girls were being removed from the organization
