This Week in Good Black News: Ava DuVernay Earns Smithsonian Honor, Tommy Davidson Lands ‘Martin’ Spinoff, and Angel Reese Becomes a Homeowner
This week in Good Black is all about reclaiming the narrative.
First up, Angel Reese is silencing critics with her latest power move: becoming a homeowner at just 22. The WNBA star reminded everyone that her vision board is thriving—and so is her bank account.
Meanwhile, Tommy Davidson is dusting off his signature Wooo Wooo Wooo!” as his beloved “Martin” character, Varnell Hill, gets a modern-day reboot on BET+. With Martin Lawrence back in the mix behind the scenes, the new series is already giving must-watch energy.
Speaking of television, Ava DuVernay is adding another well-deserved honor to her shelf. The acclaimed director and storyteller is set to receive the Smithsonian’s prestigious highest honor next month, recognizing her powerful impact on culture and equality in film. For more on these stories and others, keep reading this week in good Black news.
Angel Reese achieves homeowner status
Angel Reese is letting the keys do the talking. This week, the 22-year-old Chicago Sky forward revealed that she’s now a homeowner at 22—seemingly putting an end to months of speculation surrounding her finances.
“Retired my momma, became a homeowner, all at 22. So blessed,” the athlete shared on her Instagram Stories alongside a photo of her standing proudly in her new kitchen. “Knocked off 2 BIG things off my vision board in the first 4 months of the new year!”
Over on X, the athlete doubled down, while taking a subtle jab at her critics: “They said ‘she need to cover up’ so I went cover on VOGUE. they said she can’t afford her rent’ so I went & bought a house. thank yaaaa.”
Online chatter regarding Reese’s living arrangement stemmed from a viral IG Live last October, where the basketball star joked that her WNBA salary didn’t cover her $8,000 rent. Now with endorsement deals and Reebok, Reese’s, McDonald’s, and more, the ball player is showing that her bag goes far beyond the court.
David E. Talbert receives six-figure deal for debut memoir
Filmmaker David E. Talbert has secured a six-figure deal with Penguin Random House's Storehouse Voices imprint for his debut memoir, Everything I Know About Being a Man (I Learned From a Woman). The memoir draws from heartfelt conversations with his son, leading Talbert to reflect on the invaluable lessons imparted by his single mother.
In addition to the memoir, the “First Sunday” director is developing a half-hour television comedy inspired by the book. The series will follow a first-time father striving to become the dad he never had, blending humor with poignant insights.
Talbert is best known for his work behind the camera, including directing movies such as “Baggage Claim,” “Almost Christmas,” and more.
Tommy Davidson to star in “Martin” Spinoff Ordered by BET+
Tommy Davidson is stepping back into the spotlight. It was announced earlier this week that BET+ had officially ordered “Varnell Hill,” an eight-episode workplace comedy centered on the over-the-top talk show host Davidson originally played in two episodes of “Martin” during season two.
Set behind the scenes of the fictional “The Varnell Hill Show,” the spinoff finds the flashy host trying to stay relevant in today’s wild media landscape. Expect satire, fourth-wall breaks, and plenty of celebrity cameos.
The series is executive produced by “Martin” co-creator Martin Lawrence, showrunner Bently Evans (who also wrote and directed the pilot), and Jesse Collins. While there’s no official confirmation on Lawrence’s return as Martin Payne, reports say he’s expected to appear in multiple episodes.

Kodak Black quietly covers rent for over 200 Florida families—again
Kodak Black is once again putting community first. For the second month in a row, the rapper has reportedly covered the rent for over 200 residents in Florida’s Golden Acres projects—an act that’s been met with immense gratitude.
“He may not want the limelight, but… @KodakBlack has paid the rent for over 200 residents… the entire projects!” shared local resident Vince Thompson on social media. “You’re a blessing to a lot of people. Thank you!!”
The emcee’s longtime attorney, Bradford Cohen, also praised his client’s generosity on Instagram, writing, “He’s done so much that isn’t even in the press—paying for funerals and kids’ college funds, law school education, food, air conditioners during heat waves… This is just him doing what he does best.”
Kodak, a native of Pompano Beach, has a long history of philanthropy across South Florida. Whether it's tuition assistance or holiday giveaways, the “Gift for the Streets” rapper has consistently stepped up for those in need, often without seeking recognition.
