Premiere: This Documentary Shines a Worthy Light on Cipha Sounds

Never a dull moment in the life of one of NYC’s most respected DJs.

Nathan Miller, a filmmaker from the U.K., found himself out on the town in New York with none other than the legendary DJ Cipha Sounds.

As far as stumbling across a tour guide goes, Miller got both lucky and inspired when he met Cipha, deciding to put together some footage detailing the two-decades-long career the Roc Nation DJ has cultivated.

During the short documentary, titled Ciph, his Hot 97 cohorts Peter Rosenberg, Laura Stylez and DJ Drewski all hop on the mic to talk about how their friend has influenced the soundscape of New York City by using radio as a platform. Further showcasing just how random a night in NYC can be with Cipha as a trusty guide, the film features Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Nas and the Flatbush Zombies.

“I got inspired to do this project following my first night out with Cipha in New York,” Miller said. “That particular night we went from venue to venue and his work flow was on a different level. That night I got to meet DJ Khaled, Jadakiss, Maino and a number of other artists — it was a great insight into the life of someone in the industry.”

Miller also says that when he first met Cipha while working at the Ace Hotel in London, he was unaware of who he was. When he dug deeper, he was inspired to help illustrate his story and shine some light on Ciph’s career in radio, with a focus on his transition into comedy.

“I’m the type of person where I go where it’s hot,” Cipha said in the documentary. “So if funny is the thing that people keep saying, and that words keeps coming up, I’m going to pursue that. I go with what works.”

“Accolades, achievements and time create legendary DJs, in my opinion,” Miller said. “I know many great DJs but after creating this Ciph piece, he is the only DJ I personally know that is on legendary status. He is truly one of the hidden gems in hip hop, and is also someone that doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves.”

“As I say in the doc, the true magic happens on the journey,” Miller said.
