US State Department Speaks On A$AP Rocky Amid Swedish Detainment

"We expect all governments, including Sweden, to treat American citizens fairly and with respect."

According to Politico, the US State Department is weighing in on the controversial arrest and detainment of Harlem rap artist and fashion magnet, A$AP Rocky.

The site reports that officials were briefed on the reported conditions and treatment surrounding Rocky’s arrest, which was spurred by a street brawl between him and two men who were shown following him and his camp down a street in Sweden. Rocky reportedly went to Swedish police at will for questioning about the fight, leading to an arrest.

  • Thereafter, the case and the reported inhumane treatment of the 30-year-old shook headlines as several members of Hollywood spoke out in defense of his freedom and even launched a petition calling for his release. Rep. Adriano Espaillat of New York’s 13th congressional district also observed and identified the footage capturing the altercation as a clear case of provocation from the men. He noted that Rocky acted in self-defense after being harassed, followed and accosted. A State Department spokesperson is now speaking out with their sentiments on the matter, and more importantly, status updates on the hand that the department will play in Rocky’s case.

  • Politico reports that Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State, was briefed on the situation along with other officials like Robert O’ Brien, who serves as the special president envoy for hostage affairs. They are reportedly monitoring the situation and taking measures to ensure Rocky’s just and fair treatment during his case.

“There are certainly some facts about the arrest and detention that raise concerns,” Politico reports of the spokesperson’s statement. “We expect all governments, including Sweden, to treat American citizens fairly and with respect. We hope to see A$AP Rocky and his colleagues back on tour and reunited with friends and family soon.”

The latest update on his actual case holds that Swedish prosecutors must decide by Friday to either charge Rocky or request further detainment for him from the courts, the site continues. Politico also points out that Rocky is currently in solitary confinement.

  • We will continue to keep you updated on Rocky's case as updates become available.
