Charleston, S.C., Restaurant Kicks 25 Blacks Out

Michael Brown and his family of 25 were kicked out of Wild Wing Café, allegedly because a white customer felt threatened.

When Michael Brown and his family of 25 decided to dine at Wild Wing Café in North Charleston, South Carolina, they hardly expected to be asked to leave because of a white patron.

The group was celebrating Brown’s cousin’s last day in the city, but after a two-hour wait for seating, Brown said that the shift manager told the group that a white customer felt threatened by his party. When one of Brown’s companions began to film the conversation, the manager told the party to leave.

“I said, ‘so you're asking me to leave because you're upset because he was recording you, after we've waited for two hours, and after you've already pretty much discriminated on us?’ She answered yes," Brown recalled to WCSC.

Brown said that several attempts were made to report the incident to the restaurant’s corporate office in Mt. Pleasant South Carolina but his party did not receive a call back until he blasted the restaurant on Facebook on Thursday, a month after the incident.

After being alerted on Facebook, Debra Stokes, the chief marketing officer for Wild Wing Café, reached out to Brown.

The restaurant apologized and offered the entire group a free meal, according to Brown, but he remains unsatisfied.

"We weren't coming there for a free meal. When we came there that night, we were coming to patronize the business,” Brown said. “This is not a situation where you can just give us a free meal and everything is OK because it's deeper than that."
