Janelle Monáe Scraps Australian Tour Dates Due to Illness

Singer cuts two dates and will remain "under medical supervision to assess her recovery," rep says.

A "sudden illness" has caused Janelle Monáe to cancel two dates on the Australian leg of her Golden Electric tour, Billboard reports.

Monáe's camp didn't share details behind her medical ailment, but according to concert promoter Live Nation Australia, the songstress will remain under medical supervision until further notice. “It is with great sadness that we bring you this news," a Live Nation rep said in a statement. “Ms Monáe has been required to remain in Melbourne under medical supervision to assess her recovery. Live Nation is working to secure a rescheduled performance date later this week, subject to the progress of Ms. Monáe’s recovery."

Live Nation is expected to make extended comment on the tour's fate sometime Tuesday (May 20), and is encouraging fans to "retain their tickets" until then.

Monáe’s set in Melbourne over the weekend was cut roughly 30 minutes, after show opener Kimbra wrapped up her time slot. The announcement was made with the "Electric Lady" singer's band already set up and audience members in place. Marcus Teague, an editor from the Australian entertainment site The Vine attended the show and tweeted that the entire tour has been canned with "no rescheduling."

The five-city tour, hitting Australia and neighboring New Zealand, was revealed last month. While yesterday's gig at the Sydney Opera House has been scrapped, tickets are still available for Monáe's show Thursday at the Tivoli in Brisbane, in addition to the tour's last two stops in Auckland and Melbourne, the latter of which is scheduled for next Monday.
