Woman Forced to Give Birth in Car After Being Turned Away From Indiana Hospital

Family video shows Mercedes Wells in visible agony as staff at Franciscan Health Crown Point discharged her, insisting she wasn’t far enough along.

A mother was forced to give birth in her car just minutes after being turned away from a hospital in Crown Point, Indiana.

Video posted by Mercedes Wells’ family and shared to social media shows Wells clearly in distress while being wheeled out of the hospital by staff this past weekend, CBS News reports.

The footage shows Wells in all kinds of pain and doing what appears to be her best attempt to breathe through it, while a staff member at Franciscan Health Crown Point, pushes Wells’ wheelchair down a hallway.

Wells’ family claims that she was in active labor as she was pushed towards the exit, but hospital staff kept telling her that she was only three centimeters dilated and would have to come back when she was further along.

Wells' sister-in-law, Cherice Joy Thomspon, told the news station that Wells wasn’t due for a couple more weeks and was in Indiana to visit family.

"I feel like my family's rights have been violated," Thompson told CBS News.

Just minutes after being discharged from the hospital, Wells’ baby was born in the car with her brother’s assistance.

"She said, 'I've got to push.' … He was driving with one hand, ripped her pants off with the other hand, and looked down, and he said he could see the baby's head. And he was like, 'Oh my God, here's the baby's head,'" Thompson said. "He grabbed a blanket, caught the baby, and then put the baby on my sister-in-law's chest, Mercedes' chest, and the umbilical [cord], everything was still attached, and they kept on driving."

The family was on the phone with 911 dispatchers when the baby was delivered. The dispatchers led them to another hospital nearby. Thompson told the news station that they were grateful for the staff at Community Hospital, where Wells and her baby were recovering on Monday.

"911 was able to call the hospital and give them notice that they were coming, and so there were 15 doctors and nurses outside waiting for them to arrive," Thompson said.

CBS News reports that Wells and her baby are both fine and are now recovering from the traumatic ordeal.

"When I went to the hospital yesterday, when I opened up the door, Mercedes saw me, she just started crying, because she feels violated, she feels unheard. You know, she feels dismissed," she said.

Franciscan Health said they've opened an internal investigation and released a statement, which can be read here
