Serena Williams Gets Candid About Fame, Family, and What Success Really Costs

In a rare interview, Serena Williams reflects on how chasing greatness came at the expense of personal relationships and time with her daughters.

Serena Williams knows that the price of fame is hefty and often amounts to sacrificing time with friends and family.

The entrepreneur and retired professional tennis player spoke to People last Friday, April 11, and shared that it “definitely costs a lot” to build success.

“I'm here [in California] without my kids, and that’s a big cost for me because I spend a lot of time with my children, and they’re very attached to me, which a part of me loves. So, it’s always some cost,” the WYN Beauty founder admitted.

Williams, who shares daughters Alexis Olympia, 7, and 19-month-old Adria River with her husband of eight years, Alexis Ohanian, continued sharing the personal setbacks of professional achievements. “‘If I wanna win a championship, well what will that cost me?’” Williams asked. “It's going to cost me time with my family, it's going to cost me friends, it's going to cost me relationships. And they’re very expensive. You have to decide if it's worth it for you.”

But the legendary athlete continues to be a steadfast mother and wife, often documenting her time with her daughters on social media. Williams’ successes are just as fruitful as her family life–the 23-time Grand Slam Champion reportedly signed on to executive produce a Netflix series adaptation of the bestselling book “Carrie Soto Is Back,” per People.
