Court documents filed in a progress hearing reveal that Chris Brown has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. TMZ reports the singer, who just completed a 95-day stint in court-ordered rehab (Brown stayed in the facility five days longer than the required 90 days), also suffers from severe insomnia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The report says these ailments, along with the fact that Brown had been improperly self-medicating for years, are the reason for his anger issues and violent outbursts.
The facility writes, "Mr. Brown became aggressive and acted out physically due to his untreated mental health disorder, severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD."
According to the letter, Brown's time in a rehab was very successful and he has learned relaxation techniques. He has also tested negative for all drugs during his stay. The letter continues to praise Brown for his hard work toward recovery and especially for his commitment to community service. "Mr. Brown's attitude has been beyond exemplary in regard to his community service responsibilities."
Brown is scheduled to return to court on April 23 to hear the judge's decision on whether he violated his probation for the 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna.
