Lizzo To White People: ‘As Long As You Stay Silent, You’re Part Of The Problem’

“You have to be anti-racist. Speak up.”

Amid nationwide protests over the police killing of George Floyd, Lizzo shared a message with her 8.7 million social followers pertaining to police brutality.

  • On Sunday (May 31), she uploaded a video on Instagram where she addressed both Black and white people. Lizzo reminded Black people that they are not obligated to undertake the emotional labor of educating non-Black people about racism in this day and age when there’s an abundance of resources for them to educate themselves. “It’s exhausting and if they don’t want to see it or believe it, they don’t want to,” she expressed.

  •  Lizzo put the onus on white people to assume more responsibility when it comes to condemning acts of racism instead of being complicit by remaining silent on issues that impact people of color.

“As long as you stay silent, you’re part of the problem. know you’re not racist. But you have to be more than that. You have to be anti-racist. Speak up,” the “Truth Hurts” songstress stressed. She voiced her appreciation for those that have spoken up in support of black lives.

  • She continued her message on the post’s caption where she added that “protest is not the end of progress, it is the beginning.”

“I wonder what would happen if all the big companies and celebrities who have shown support on social media came out and used their platform to let activists and protesters speak and be seen? I wonder what would happen if we allowed the outrage to have positive influence in our local government? What would happen if those in power defunded the police & dismantled their racist culture and corrupt power structures?” she wrote. “Cities are burning, are you watching? I stand with Minneapolis. I believe in us. Change is gonna come.”
