Simone Biles Claps Back at ‘Sad’ Comments About Her Belize Vacation After Near-Death Medical Scare
Simone Biles is not here for the side-eyes directed at her.
The Olympic champion pushed back after social media users questioned why she was posting vacation photos from Belize so soon after revealing a frightening medical emergency. In the comment section of an Instagram post, one user wrote, “Almost died but look at these traveling selfies.... 😂😂😂,” and Biles did not let that slide.
“Ugh these comments make me sad,” Biles replied. “A little over two weeks ago, I experienced a serious medical emergency that could have ended very differently, and this trip has been part of allowing myself to heal & appreciate being here.” She added, “I hope you understand that life changing experiences can shift your perspective. & that you're able to extend a little more grace to others moving forward 😘 have a nice day!”
Biles had previously been transparent about going through what she described as one of the scariest experiences of her life. Earlier this month, she shared a photo in her Instagram Stories from a hospital setting and told followers that she was “not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today's age,” but that “almost dying wasn't on my bingo card earlier this week.” She also said, “This was one of, if not the scariest experience of my life,” and noted that she had been “in bed resting this week.”
Biles has not publicly shared the full details of the medical emergency and told another commenter on an earlier post that she was “not ready to talk about it just yet.” But she has made clear that the vacation in Belize is not about ignoring what happened. It is part of her recovery, part of her reset and part of her choosing peace after a serious scare.
Biles is not just any celebrity posting a travel dump. She is one of the most decorated gymnasts in history, and her recent comments fit into a broader reality she has talked about before: elite athletics can take a real toll on the body, even for a champion at her level. In this moment, the message is simple — she does not owe the internet a performance of suffering to prove the seriousness of what she went through. What she does owe herself is rest. And on that front, Biles seems determined to take it.
