Aaliyah Dana Haughton, known mononymously as Aaliyah, was born on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Detroit, Michigan. From a young age, she showed immense talent in music and performance, appearing on the TV show "Star Search" and performing with Gladys Knight.

Her career took off at just 15 years old with the release of her debut album, "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number" (1994), produced by R. Kelly. The album went platinum, spawning hits like “Back & Forth” and the title track. Despite early controversy regarding her rumored marriage to Kelly, Aaliyah remained focused on her career, eventually cutting ties with him and moving forward with a new musical direction.

Aaliyah’s second album, "One in a Million" (1996), produced by Timbaland and Missy Elliott, marked a dramatic evolution in her sound. With hits like “If Your Girl Only Knew” and “4 Page Letter,” the album was a commercial and critical success. Her smooth vocals, innovative beats, and cutting-edge style positioned her as a leader in the new wave of R&B.

In addition to music, Aaliyah broke into acting. She starred in the 2000 martial arts film "Romeo Must Die" alongside Jet Li, for which she also recorded the hit single “Try Again.” She was set to star in other major productions, including "The Matrix" sequels and "Queen of the Damned," further cementing her crossover appeal.

Her third, self-titled album “Aaliyah” (2001), showcased her growth as an artist and included hits like “Rock the Boat” and “More Than a Woman.” Tragically, just a month after the album’s release, Aaliyah died in a plane crash in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001. She was only 22 years old.
