American Black Film Festival Promises ‘Something for Everyone’ Adding Several New Movies to Its Lineup

Themes range from conspiracy theories to romance and comedy horror.

The American Black Film Festival has announced several new movies coming to its lineup from various networks and streaming giants. The event is set to take place in Miami Beach from June 14 to 18 and promises to cover a wide range of genres, offering “something for everyone.”

In a statement, festival producer and ABFF Ventures president and COO Nicole Friday shared how excited the organization was to have attendees “experience all of the great content both live and virtually. From conspiracy theories to romance and comedy horror to learning about the first Black supermodel named Donyale Luna to grace the cover of British Vogue. There really is something for everyone to see at the festival.”

Ahead of this year’s festival, check out some of the movies and documentaries added to the 2023 lineup.

  • Donyale Luna: Supermodel

    Donyale Luna: Supermodel will focus on the untold story of pioneering Black supermodel Donyal Luna. Before Jourdan Dunn and Naomi Campbell, there was Donyal. Born Peggy Ann Freeman, the actress was one of the first Black models to appear on the cover of British Vogue.

    Primetime Emmy Award-winning actress Zendaya channeled the fashion icon for the 50th anniversary Essence magazine cover shoot.

  • Time of Essence

    The ABFF lineup also added Time of Essence,  a five-part docuseries from OWN that looks to celebrate 50 years of the monthly lifestyle magazine, Essence. Each episode will cover each decade since its inception in the 70 to today with voices from stars including Halle Berry, Sheryl Lee Ralph Regina Hall, and more.

  • I’m A Virgo

    Director Boots Riley will be making his television debut with the Prime Video series I’m A Virgo starring Jharrel Jerome who portrays Cootie a 13-foot-tall teenager in this coming of age story. The Sorry To Bother You director, created, wrote, and directed the series.

    It also stars  Mike Epps and Carmen Ejogo.

  • The Perfect Find

    Gabrielle Union is Jenna Jones in the romance comedy The Perfect Find from Leigh Davenport and Director Numa Perrier. Things are bad enough when Jenna finds out her new boss is her frenemy, Darcy. However, the budding journalist may have made matters worse when she starts dating her boss’s son, Eric, who also happens to be the company’s videographer.

    The film also stars Keith Powers as Eric and Gina Torres as Darcy Vale.

  • The Blackening

    The Blackening features a colorful cast of stars, including Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, Melvin Gregg, Yvonne Orji, and tons more who find themselves in the fight of the lives after a weekend getaway trips goes deadly wrong in this horror comedy from Dewayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver.
