6 Times Gina And Martin Gave Us Love, Respect, And Laughs

The show’s 30-year reunion special is coming to BET Plus on June 16.

Yes, Martin was absolutely one of the funniest sitcoms of all time, but there was also depth to it, too—particularly the love between Martin (Martin Lawrence) and his longtime bae Gina (Tisha Campbell). Though their relationship was not always easy, they managed to make it through even the roughest spells with love and respect intact, so much so that their catchphrases for each other––“Damn, Gina!” and “You go boy”–– became part of the pop culture lexicon. As we gear up for the show’s 30-year reunion special on BET Plus coming June 16, here’s a look back at six times Martin and Gina gave us love, respect, and laughs.

Gina Prepares to Throw Hands with Ms. Trinidad

“Blackboard Jungle Fever” Season 1, Episode 17

The iconic model, Beverly Johnson guest, starred in one of the most memorable Martin episodes ever, playing Martin’s third-grade teacher, Ms. Trinidad. Despite Martin telling her over and over again that he’s already got a lady, Ms. Trinidad would not take no for an answer. But when Gina catches Ms. Trinidad all over her man, she prepares to throw hands. “Nobody messes with my man but me,” Gina tells her. We heard that, girl!

Gina Gets Her Head Stuck in the Bed’s Headboard

“Headin’ for Trouble,” Season 4, Episode 12

One thing about Martin and Gina, they kept the physical flame flickering with lots of affection, touch, and time in the bedroom. Not all that time was perfect, though: a case in point was the time Gina got her head stuck in their new headboard. Martin Lawrence rightfully gets kudos for his physical comedy throughout the series, but this is one of those times Tisha Campbell proved she could go toe to toe with him for laughs, too.

Martin Fights for His Lady

“Guard Your Grill” Season 2, Episode 21

Another all-time greatest Martin episode had him square off in the ring against Thomas “Hitman” Hearns after the boxer gets a little too flirty with Gina for Martin’s liking. Suffice it to say, Martin didn’t win that fight, but even when he comes home beaten beyond recognition, Gina still shows her man love. Aww.

Martin and Gina Come to an Agreement About Money Matters

“Yours Mine and Ours” Season 2, Episode 22

One of the biggest things couples fight over is money, and that truth came to the forefront in an episode that had Martin and Gina learning how best to manage their coins. It all started when Martin bought a massive TV called a Hoshitoshi 2000 with their joint money, and Gina made him take it back. Later, Martin learns she’d been using the account to buy stuff, too, resulting in an argument that eventually made them realize they should keep their money separate. Hey, it’s all about learning, right?

Martin Loves Gina at Her Worst

“Really, Gina Is Not My Lover” Season 2, Episode 2

Martin proves he’ll support his boo no matter when she shows up to his high school class reunion zooted on painkillers and looking a complete hot mess. Though he didn’t claim her at first cause he was so embarrassed, Martin helped Gina get it together and defended her honor.

Martin Proposes to Gina

“Love Is in Your Face: Part 2” Season 2, Episode 19

This one still gives us all the feels! Though still relatively early in the series’ five-season run, Martin’s proposal to his lady was still highly anticipated and highly emotional. Martin was feeling a type of way about Gina moving to New York without him, and he decides to win her back. Brian McKnight comes out to surprise her (and us) with a beautiful love song, and Gina is full-on sobbing as she says yes. Where are the tissues?!
