This Week in Good Black News: Housing Help in Atlanta thanks to Killer Mike, Keisha Lance Bottoms’ Big Win, and Michael Jordan’s Big FaceTime Call

From community investment to a legendary basketball surprise and a long-anticipated film update, this roundup is all about Black wins worth celebrating.

There is plenty to feel good about this week, and let’s be honest, we deserve that.

Black stories are showing up in the places that shape our lives most — the homes we build, the leaders we choose, the elders we celebrate, and the cultural moments we keep waiting to see come back around. Some of these wins are quiet, some are emotional, and some are just plain fun, but all of them deserve a little extra shine.

This week, Killer Mike announced he’s making room…or rather, housing for those who need it in Atlanta; Michael Jordan tugged at all the heartstrings with one simple phone call; Keisha Lance Bottoms could become Georgia’s governor; and a cult classic film franchise is finally getting another installment. We love good Black news around here! Get into it!

Killer Mike’s Atlanta housing work is the gift that keeps on giving. The rapper has long talked about affordable homeownership in the neighborhoods he grew up in, and that mission still feels timely as Atlanta Housing announced it is more than doubling down-payment assistance for eligible Housing Choice Voucher participants, raising support from $25,000 to $60,000. The agency says the increase is meant to make homeownership more attainable for families in a tight market, and it lands in the same spirit of self-sustainability and community investment Mike has been pushing for years.

Keisha Lance Bottoms is headed into the governor’s race with real momentum. The former Atlanta mayor secured the Democratic nomination for Georgia governor, making her one of the marquee names in a major 2026 race. Bottoms has been a statewide contender from the start, and her win keeps a Black woman at the center of one of the year’s most closely watched political fights.

Michael Jordan gave one of the sweetest moments of the week. The NBA legend FaceTimed his former Laney High School teacher, Ms. Etta, while she was in hospice care, fulfilling a bucket-list wish that had been building quietly behind the scenes. The call, which was arranged after hospice staff and family tried to reach him, became a deeply emotional moment of laughter, memories, and gratitude.

And yes, “Last Friday” is still out there, and that alone counts as good news. Ice Cube has said the fourth “Friday” installment is finally moving forward, and the long-awaited sequel remains in development, with Mike Epps still part of the conversation around the franchise’s future. For anybody who has been quoting “Friday” for decades, that is enough to have yourself a good Friday!
