Woman Charged With Attempted Murder After Shots Fired at Rihanna’s Home
A Florida woman has been charged with attempted murder after prosecutors say she fired multiple rounds into the Beverly Hills property of Robyn ‘Rihanna’ Fenty while the singer, her family, and staff were inside — an attack authorities describe as “willful, deliberate and premeditated.”
The suspect, 35-year-old Ivanna Ortiz, faces one count of attempted murder, 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper. If convicted as charged, she could face life in state prison.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman, speaking at a news conference, said investigators believe Ortiz traveled to the home in an “attempt to murder” Rihanna and explained how the counts correspond to people at the property. “In that residence, Rihanna was there with her partner, her three children, her mother, and two staff people representing eight of the 10 of the counts of dealing with an assault with a semi-automatic firearm,” Hochman said, according to People. He added, “Opening fire in any populated neighborhood is extremely dangerous, puts lives at risk and will be fully prosecuted.”
Police and prosecutors say the March 8 incident involved rounds striking the singer’s home and a nearby residence. Dispatch audio obtained by outlets captured callers reporting “approximately 10 shots,” and law enforcement sources told reporters the suspect used an AR-15-style rifle. Ortiz was arrested after fleeing the scene and was found in Sherman Oaks; bail was set at roughly $1.8 million. No one was injured.
Ortiz, who by some reports is a licensed speech pathologist and has prior arrests in Florida, was represented at arraignment by the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. Prosecutors say social-media posts from a Facebook account believed to belong to Ortiz referenced Rihanna in the weeks before the shooting, though a motive has not been publicly established. The case is scheduled for further court proceedings later this month.
The incident prompted quick statements from local law enforcement and heightened security concerns in celebrity neighborhoods. The Los Angeles Police Department and county prosecutors stressed the danger of indiscriminate gunfire in populated areas and said they will pursue the case vigorously. For now, the investigation is ongoing.
