A man in Charlotte, North Carolina, is facing murder charges after his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son died from extreme abuse, reported WSOCTV.

Christopher Sims at first faced a felony child abuse charges after the baby suffered the serious injuries while in his care. However, on Thursday the baby died, said police. 

When officers were called to Carolinas Medical Center on Wednesday, they discovered the boy was in critical condition and unable to breathe on his own.

According to authorities, the child was suffering from several injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, reported WBTV.

Detectives then interviewed the child’s mother — whose identity remains unknown — and learned Sims was left alone with the child when the injuries occurred.  

A murder warrant has been obtained for Sims in connection with the 2-year-old’s death.

Sims is currently at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department and is expected to appear in court Friday.
