On Thursday (Jan. 9), the Recording Academy announced that it will be holding a special Grammy tribute concert for the one and only majestic Purple One, Prince. Titled “Let’s Go Crazy: The GRAMMY Salute To Prince,” the tribute will be held on January at the Los Angeles Convention Center two days after the 62nd annual award ceremony.
John Legend, Earth, Wind & Fire, Alicia Keys, Usher and H.E.R were among the many A-list musicians slated to perform at the tribute concert. The show will also feature several of Prince’s closest collaborators that the funk-R&B icon worked with throughout his career. His former drummer Sheila E. will serve as the post-Grammys special's musical director alongside the iconic production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Sheila will also take the stage during the night.
In a statement provided to BET, Recording Academy President Deborah Dugan said, “Prince. The Purple One. His Royal Badness — regardless of how you identify him, he is indisputably one of the greatest musical virtuosos of all time.”
She continued, “With his subversive attitude and commanding nature, he straddled musical genres and created electrifying music that was bursting with character. He continues to serve as an inspirational icon for artists and fans worldwide, and we are so honored to pay tribute to his legacy.”
A taping of the special will air on CBS sometime later this year.
