Twin Sisters Achieve Top Honors at Stephenson High School
In an inspiring display of determination and sibling support, twin sisters Carissa and Aissa Swope have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of Stephenson High School's Class of 2025, according to reports. Their academic achievements are a testament to their resilience and the strong bond they share.
Throughout their high school journey, the 17-year-old twins have consistently motivated each other to excel. "We've always been competitive, so it has been a race to the top, but not one and two, just the top 10 percent of the class," Carissa explained. "Now, I get to stand next to my sister, and we both get to give speeches. It's a blessing, and I'm really excited."
Unique challenges shaped their path to academic excellence. As daughters of deaf parents, Carissa and Aissa often served as interpreters during parent-teacher conferences and school events. This responsibility instilled in them a sense of maturity and a drive to succeed.
"It's just been a long journey," Aissa reflected. "We've always wanted to show people that we can do things or that we're smart, and I feel like people might have underestimated us because maybe it's because our parents are [deaf]. It's just nice to get that recognition, for sure."
Their mutual encouragement played a crucial role in their success. Aissa admitted that Carissa's support was instrumental in her achieving the salutatorian title. "She's definitely been my biggest motivator," Aissa said. Carissa echoed this sentiment, acknowledging that Aissa has also always inspired her.
Initially, their parents placed them in separate classes to foster individual growth. However, as they progressed through high school, the sisters chose to take the same courses, pushing each other to maintain high academic standards.
Looking ahead, both sisters plan to attend Emory University. Carissa intends to major in neuroscience and behavioral biology, aspiring to become a family medicine physician. Inspired by her parents' experiences, she wants to establish a practice that is accessible to individuals with disabilities. Aissa plans to major in biology and become an anesthesiologist.
Their story is a powerful reminder of the impact of perseverance, family support, and the unbreakable bond between siblings.
