R. Kelly Called His Alleged Victims 'Disgruntled Groupies’ Who Were ‘Dying’ To Be With Him
In new court documents filed by R. Kelly ahead of his upcoming arraignment on a federal racketeering charge (alleging he ran a sex trafficking ring that targeted woman and underage girls), the disgraced R&B singer and his lawyer called the women testifying against him “disgruntled groupies” and alleged they are only speaking up now to get back at the R&B singer.
His lawyer, Douglas Anton, met with prosecutors in court on Wednesday (July 31) in New York where he refuted claims that Kelly ran a sex trafficking ring according to Reuters. Describing the charge as an “absurdity,” Anton said that Kelly’s alleged victims voluntarily sought him out of their own accord at luxury fan experiences where they pined for his attention.
He stated that the women were “dying to be with” Kelly, readily offering themselves up for sex, and are only after the singer now because of “groupie remorse” and to become famous.
When prosecutors claimed that Kelly reportedly dictated that his sexual partners had to get his permission to eat or go to the bathroom, Anton proclaimed the rules were for their protection and to ensure "the safest, most enjoyable fan experience."
"If this was the 'pattern' or 'enterprise' the government seeks to make it out to be, [it] is five disgruntled groupies, not all of which are alleged to be under age, who now show groupie remorse so many years later," Anton stated in the filing according to Reuters.
Kelly’s legal team made the filing to convince a judge to grant Kelly bail before his pending trial this Friday. It still wouldn’t free him, as a court in Chicago has denied bail over the 13 criminal charges, including child pornography and obstruction of justice, he is currently facing there.
