New York Knicks Tap Mike Brown As New Head Coach
Mike Brown is taking his talents to New York City.
The New York Knicks have tapped Brown as their new head coach and are expected to come to terms on a contract soon, according to CBS Sports.
Brown would be the 32nd coach in the franchise’s history.
Going into the interview process after firing Tom Thibodeau in June, the Knicks had Brown as their top candidate because of his extensive résumé and his contributions to four NBA championship teams as an assistant/associate head coach with the San Antonio Spurs and the Golden State Warriors.
Additionally, Brown’s experience coaching LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Stephen Curry, and his pedigree of Gregg Popovich’s coaching were also deciding factors in his hire, The Athletic reported.
Before Brown’s hire, the Knicks reportedly reached out to several current head coaches, including Ime Udoka (Rockets), Jason Kidd (Mavericks), Billy Donovan (Bulls), and Quin Snyder (Hawks). Also, Taylor Jenkins, former head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, Pelicans assistant James Borrego, and Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori were candidates for the position. The Knicks reportedly attempted to contact South Carolina women's coach Dawn Staley.
Last season, he was fired by the Kings after 31 games this season with many feeling that the termination was unmeritorious. Under his watch, the Kings had back-to-back 45-plus-win seasons, the first time since 2005, and he ended the team's 16-year playoff drought in his first season.
In his head coaching career, Brown has posted a regular season record of 454-304. He previously coached the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.
Brown will now lead the Knicks, who have championship aspirations after losing to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
