Look: The Most Raw and Uncensored Screenshots About Island Men and Cheating You’ll Read Today
The allure of an island man is quite simply hard to deny. I am not sure if it’s their swarthy complexions or libidinous accents but something about all of the above (and then some) makes them irresistible. After all, Stella didn’t get her groove back in Wyoming! In lieu of that, it is by no surprise that island men use their appeal to their advantage when it comes to seducing women. ALL women. Not to mention being a woman of partial Caribbean descent, I have witnessed firsthand from the men in and around my family the mesmeric effect they can have on the female species.
The charismatic island man currently trending is multi-Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt. The fastest man alive’s most recent accomplishment off the track is landing the cover of GQ magazine’s December ‘16 issue. With a little island pride and a smidge of curiosity, I was intrigued to read what Usain had to say in his interview about his personal life.
To my dismay a few stereotypical claims close to home were brought to light in GQ, THE men’s definitive magazine, for the entire (male) universe to read. Usain Bolt made claims of his Caribbean culture being responsible for his "womanizing" and/or promiscuous ways. Was that actually true? Or was that just another excuse to justify one of the many double standards hidden in the folds of the male brain?
I could not help but round up a few fellow island friends of mine for an exclusive group chat to anecdotally suss out fact from fiction when it comes to this stereotype!

Where do I apply for a position to be a Jamaican father/uncle!?! Seems like they have a lot of love to give and get ALL the love back in being pampered and taken care of. Hmm. *Reconsiders moving from Canada to Jamaica, disguised as a man!*

It was disheartening to learn that Caribbean families/women accept this indiscriminately sexually active behavior of their louse spouses. Let’s get into the bold dad who created an album to gloat about the many women he had been with in his lifetime. Taking “trophy wife/girlfriend” to a new plateau!
BATTY MON CHEATING!? Another topic for another time….

Jewels makes a valid reference to men of color cheating as a derivative of slavery. The destruction of black families and torturously emasculating black men definitely plays a role in the relationship dysfunction we see today. A primary goal amongst those in power was to destroy the wholesomeness of family values and virtues to even more so dehumanize people of color. Not an excuse in 2016 though, just another reason to be better.

Jewels’s grandmother was the 'other woman' for 35 years. As a result, her daughters seemed to be attracted to married men. (Also, LMAO at Neil '35 Years a MATEY!') To aspire to be the 'other woman' because it is the norm as opposed to it being a (very stupid) choice (ie. side chick to celebrity/athlete/seeking arrangements for money) is an eye-opener of my Caribbean sisters!

To conclude:
Although it was a blow to the heart accepting that Usain Bolt’s cultural allegations were remarkably on point, in an oddly reassuring way my friends and I managed to conclude simply: cheaters cheat. Period. No matter the gender, culture, status/financial resources, race... Black, white, Puerto-Rican, or Haitian. I have also learned that GQ is probably the smallest platform in social totality to poison the male universe with such stereotypes. The current culture of social media prevails as the reigning champions in glorifying womanizers and the acts thereof with comedy-driven memes and posts.
So whether you’re Stella trying to find her groove on an exotic island or Melania Trump condoning the sexist locker-room talk of husband Donald Trump, carefully remember that Usain’s “cultural stereotype” can live within a little bit of all of us!
NYC native Brittany Whitfield is an entertainment-driven Renaissance woman who has dipped her hands in comedy, beauty and TV/film in hopes of eventually becoming a big fish in a BIG pond.
