The Markle Effect: The Royal Wedding Broke An Incredible TV Ratings Record

Read the early reports.

We knew Americans cared a little more than they probably should about another country’s royal wedding, but the numbers have got to make your head scratch.

Apparently, Meghan Markle being a United States citizen sealed the deal as early reports say the royal wedding was viewed by more Americans than Brits.

Despite the fact the wedding aired in the States during the wee hours of Saturday morning (May 19), 17.6 million people tuned in, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

NBC brought in the best ratings with 6.42 million viewers checking out Meghan and Prince Harry’s big day. ABC had 6.38 million views while CBS came in third with 4.79 million.

Those numbers are expected to climb with other networks who tallied into the mix. 18 million people reportedly watched the wedding in the United Kingdom.

Surprisingly, this latest royal wedding is expected to trail the 2011 ceremony between Prince William and Kate Middleton, which averaged 23 million viewers in the U.S.
