Shooting Kills 1, Wounds 7 At Homecoming Party Near Fort Valley State University Campus

The HBCU was on temporary lockdown.

Georgia law enforcement officials are investigating a deadly shooting early Saturday (Oct. 23) morning at an off-campus party near Fort Valley State University (FVSU).

Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said one person died and seven were injured, noting that the victim who died was not a student at the historically Black university.

Peach County coroner Kerry Rooks identified the fatally shot victim as 27-year-old Tyler French, according to Atlanta station WSB. By Saturday afternoon, the GBI announced that all seven wounded individuals were in stable condition.

“Investigators need your assistance identifying the person(s) responsible for the shooting,” GBI tweeted.

FVSU students were at the party, and some of them suffered non-life-threatening injuries, an official university statement said, according to WSB. The campus was placed on temporary lockdown as a precautionary measure.
