On July 4th, while many celebrated the day off with fish fries and fan dances, the former first family celebrated their eldest daughter Malia Obama's 27th birthday.

Former President Barack Obama and First Lady, hugger-in-chief, Michelle Obama both shared loving Instagram posts encouraging Malia to "keep shining bright."

Former first lady and girl from the Southside, Michelle Obama, captioned her post, "Happy birthday to my darling, Malia! You’ve grown into such a smart, strong, and beautiful young woman, and I’m so proud of the way you show up in the world."

While Barack shared this lovely tribute, "Happy birthday, Malia! Thanks for always lighting up our world. So proud of you."

Malia Obama has stepped out on her own in recent years. After studying film at Harvard, she recently sat in the director's chair to direct ads promoting WNBA superstar A'ja Wilson's signature Nike shoe. The young filmmaker who would like to make her own name, dropping "Obama", has also written for the highly acclaimed series, "The Swarm." She made her debut at Sundance with her short film “The Heart.”
