Ex-NFL Player Darryl ‘Buster’ Skrine Arrested in Roswell on Fraud Charges

Authorities say the former cornerback scammed women on dating apps out of nearly $300,000 and is also wanted in Canada for a separate case.

Former NFL cornerback Darryl “Buster” Skrine has been arrested in Roswell, Georgia, on 18 charges tied to what police describe as a large-scale fraud scheme targeting women through dating apps.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Roswell police began investigating Skrine in July after a woman reported being financially abused. Detectives say Skrine lured women with fabricated stories about money problems and promised repayment from his NFL annuity. Instead, investigators allege, he used their funds for personal luxuries, including gift cards, Airbnb rentals, and trips.

Authorities have identified three victims in Wisconsin, North Carolina, and New York, with combined losses of roughly $300,000. Police believe there may be additional victims across the country.

Skrine was arrested Wednesday morning and now faces multiple charges, including deposit account fraud, identity fraud, financial transaction card fraud, theft by taking, and criminal attempt to commit theft.

Police also confirmed Skrine is wanted in Canada. Durham Regional Police arrested him in August 2023 in connection with a $100,000 check fraud case. He was released on bail in April 2024 with GPS monitoring, but “removed his device and fled back to the United States,” according to authorities.

Roswell police said they are working with Canadian officials to ensure Skrine faces charges in both countries. The investigation is ongoing, and police urged anyone who may have been victimized to contact Detective Fields at 770-640-4455 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS or StopCrimeATL.org.

Skrine, 36, grew up in Cherokee County and played high school football at Etowah High School before playing in college at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. He then went on to play in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Tennessee Titans, retiring in 2022.
