Joe Biden's Farewell Address Warns of Growing Oligarchy and Tech Threats
This week, President Joe Biden delivered a heartfelt farewell address from the Oval Office, where he raised serious concerns about the dangers of concentrated wealth and unchecked technological power.
“Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead,” Biden said, emphasizing the growing grip of the ultra-wealthy on the nation.
Invoking parallels to President Dwight Eisenhower’s 1961 warning about the military-industrial complex, Biden cautioned against a new threat: “I’m equally concerned about the potential rise of a tech-industrial complex that could pose real dangers to our country as well.”
The 15-minute address, likely Biden’s final opportunity to speak directly to the nation as president, also modeled the importance of a peaceful transfer of power.
Without naming his successor, President-elect Donald Trump, Biden subtly urged vigilance. “We must remain on guard to protect our freedoms and our institutions,” he said, leaving no doubt about his concerns for the nation’s future.
As he prepares to leave the national stage after more than five decades in public service, Biden's message was both a farewell and a rallying cry. His stark warnings serve as a reminder of the challenges ahead, even as he departs the White House on Monday.
