Herschel Walker’s Senate Campaign Falsely Claimed He Graduated From The University Of Georgia

The claim has since been scrubbed from the campaign website.

In a bid for the U.S. Senate, Republican Herschel Walker falsely claimed he graduated from the University of Georgia.

It’s an assertion that the former star running back at the Southeastern Conference school has now removed from his campaign website, just hours after it was posted. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Walker’s campaign said he “graduated from the university with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice” late Thursday.

It’s a falsehood that has also proliferated elsewhere, including an online biography advertising Walker’s book, at a campaign rally for his bid to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, and even during his introduction this year at a congressional hearing.

Walker has since released a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution confessing he did not graduate from college.

“I was majoring in Criminal Justice at UGA when I left to play in the USFL my junior year,” Walker said in reference to the professional football league. “After playing with the New Jersey Generals, I returned to Athens to complete my degree, but life and football got in the way.”

Walker was introduced by U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen as a UGA graduate who earned a criminal justice degree at a February U.S. House subcommittee hearing on reparations. A Republican activist also welcomed him to the state at a November campaign rally in Augusta by highlighting his “bachelor’s degree.”

In both instances, Walker didn’t correct either introduction.

A political newcomer, Walker became an instant Republican favorite when he entered the Senate race in August and was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

Currently, Walker faces several GOP rivals, including Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, military veteran Kelvin King and former Navy SEAL Latham Saddler. The nomination winner will challenge Warnock, Georgia’s first Black U.S. senator in a race that could determine control of the entire U.S. Senate.
