Barack Obama Shares Why He’s Glad He Never Had A Son

On his wife’s podcast, the former president opens up about the emotional complexities of raising a boy and why parenting daughters felt more natural.

Michelle Obama has previously expressed that she’s content without having a son, and now Barack Obama is echoing that same sentiment.

During an episode of her podcast “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson,” the former first lady opened up about being “glad” she didn’t have a son after her guest, Angie Martinez, jokingly suggested she and Barack should’ve added a boy to their tribe.

“I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy,” the 61-year-old revealed.

“He would’ve been Barack Obama,” she says jokingly before expressing her understanding that he would have big shoes to fill after his father.

“I would have felt for him.”

Barack shared the same sentiments on his wife’s podcast, “The Light,” sharing it would’ve been a bit “difficult” raising a son.

“I think we did a pretty good job of raising our girls, but I’ve said often that I think I would have had more difficulty raising a son,” he said.

“I think I might’ve been more judgmental, harder,” he added, before sharing his reasoning for his perspective.

“I would’ve tried to—I’d like to think I would have been more self-aware enough to combat that. But I just think father-son relationships, for me, particularly if I don’t have a dad around to show it to me, might’ve been more difficult.”
