Mother Sues Nevada’s Largest School District Over Racial Harassment
A Nevada mother has filed a federal lawsuit against the Clark County School District, alleging her son endured nearly two years of racial harassment at an elementary school while officials failed to act.
KLAS-8 reports that Jessica Orta filed the complaint on Sept. 22 stemming from her son’s challenges at O.K. Adcock Elementary School, where she says repeated racist slurs and bullying went largely ignored.
“I’m here to address the racial harassment and bullying my son has endured,” Orta told the Clark County School District Board of Trustees in January, according to KLAS. “Despite repeated reports to the teacher, the school failed to take meaningful action. This inaction allowed the harassment to escalate.”
The lawsuit states that starting in fall 2023, her son was targeted with racial insults such as “You’re too Black,” “You shower in Kool-Aid,” and “You’re a watermelon muncher.” In the 2024–25 school year, one boy allegedly blocked her son from entering school, saying he was “too black to come inside.”
The complaint argues the district tried “unreasonable and ineffective steps” that failed to protect him and created an unsafe learning environment. It names eight staff members, including the school’s principal and a district trustee.
According to the filing, an assistant principal dismissed Orta’s concerns by saying one of the bullies was also Black. Orta’s attorneys declined to comment, saying the complaint speaks for itself.
Her son no longer attends Adcock Elementary, and the lawsuit does not specify damages sought.
