Video Evidence Surfaces in Death of Delta State Student Demartravion 'Trey' Reed
Authorities in Cleveland, Mississippi, confirmed Wednesday that there is video evidence connected to the death of 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, whose body was discovered hanging from a tree on Delta State University’s campus earlier this week.
WLBT-3 reported that the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office released a statement Monday night, noting that their preliminary examination showed Reed did not have “lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones, or injuries consistent with assault.” The coroner said there was currently no evidence to suggest Reed was physically attacked before his death.
At a Wednesday morning press conference, Delta State’s Director of Public Safety, Mike Peeler, responded to questions about video evidence. “There are videos,” Peeler confirmed, adding that they are in the hands of investigators. When pressed on whether the footage captured what happened to Reed, Peeler declined to elaborate, saying, “I can’t speak [to] that at this moment. But again, there is video, but... the investigation is ongoing.”
Peeler said Reed’s body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office and that preliminary autopsy results are expected within 24 hours. He emphasized that the university remains a safe environment for students and staff, calling the incident “isolated.”
University President Daniel Ennis also addressed the community, acknowledging the grief Reed’s death has caused. “While the preliminary report of the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office indicates no evidence of foul play, I, we, recognize that this is not only about facts,” he said. “It’s about emotions, and it’s about feelings.”
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump announced Tuesday that he has been retained by Reed’s family, calling for a “full, independent investigation.” Crump said, “We cannot accept vague conclusions when so many questions remain.”
The FBI’s Jackson Division has confirmed it is in contact with local authorities and is prepared to investigate if federal violations are suspected.
