Big Sean Addresses His Relationship With Jhené Aiko, And Fans Probably Weren’t Expecting This Answer

“I can see from how things can look from the outside…”

Big Sean is making his return to music all about celebrating re-discovering himself and letting go of toxic fixations. Sean Don surprised his fans when he popped up on Twitter to offer some new music after a two-year-long self-imposed hiatus from music, besides the occasional feature.

  • Following the release of his “Overtime” single, Sean dropped a new single, “Single Again,” 30 hours later on Friday (July 26) preaching to the tenets of loving one’s self and leveling up on a spiritual level.

In the song, Sean raps about taking time to rediscover himself post-breakup after realizing he used relationships to mask his own problems, and needing to learn how to be alone.

  • The uplifting three-minute anthem was quickly overshadowed by the fact that his ex-girlfriend Jhené Aiko, who he semi-amicably split from in 2018, is featured on the track. Ty Dolla $ign also provided vocals for the song. Yes, you read that right. Big Sean wrote a song about his breakup that features the aforementioned ex-girlfriend.

Optics aside, Sean and Jhené have been very open about where they stand with one another and how there is no ill will between them. When Jhené released her deep cut “Triggered,” an emotional ballad detailing the heartbreak she felt from an unnamed lover, fans were ready to snatch Sean up in her defense until she stepped in.

  • But evidently, they haven’t let it go. Alongside the music, Sean has been open about sharing the healthy headspace he’s been in as of late from taking time to deal with his anxiety and focus on his mental health. So it makes sense that he has a whole new outlook on navigating relationships, especially when you consider his highly publicized past romances.

He tweeted, "In this hot girl summer I’m just tryna find a wife.” The responses came in swiftly, and many weren't kind as they blamed him for his breakup with Jhené. "This man out here acting like he didn't have Jhene and fumbled the bag," one person wrote under the now-deleted tweet. The Detroit rapper politely bumped back that he didn’t "fumble" their relationship and that it’s “all love” between him and Jhené.

“She’s amazing! I didn't fumble anything but I can see from how things can look from the outside looking in. It's all love though, that's what you don't understand," he wrote.

  • Safe to say, it’s highly likely Jhené and Sean are on good terms. In an Instagram post in April, Aiko wrote about how she'll always love Sean, and then in May, she shared a photo of her and him hanging out at the beach with the caption, "Today was a good day."

If anything, their musical reunion shows how you can still have a good relationship with your former flame even if you’re both “Single Again,” naysayers be damned.
