Cardi B Calls Out the Female Rap Game Drama
Cardi B cleared some things up in her sit-down with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. With her long-awaited sophomore album, Am I the Drama?, the Bronx rapper explained why she named it that and how tension with other women in rap has followed her career.
She told Lowe that the title comes from years of headlines tied to her name. “It’s like, ‘D*mn, does drama chase me? Or am I the drama?” Cardi said. “I just really think I was born with an anointed light. Sometimes the light is great, but it also disturbs people’s peace. It draws people to me, and it’s not always going to be good. That light might bother people … maybe it’s too bright, it’s too loud.”
Cardi also spoke about the way other female rappers interact with her. “Even in the industry, there is a lot of different female rappers, but for some reason, it’s something about me that these b**ches can’t stand,” she explained. “They can’t f**k with me. Some b**ches, I feel like they’re on this class right now, they’re sophomores, and I’m a senior. And it’s like, you want to f**k with the senior so bad. You think you’re here with the senior. You’re not even a junior. You need to worry about them other sophomores before you start worrying about the f**king senior.”
Her frustration reveals the considerable amount of energy she has had to expend dealing with outside noise. “They always got to focus on throwing me shots and throwing me slings … and I’m sick of it. It’s like, f**k you, f**k everybody.” Cardi has been involved in high-profile disputes over the years with Nicki Minaj, JT of City Girls, Bia, political commentator Candace Owens, and even her estranged husband, Offset.
Even with all the drama, Cardi is focused on her music. She’s already released singles “Outside” and “Imaginary Playerz,” and Am I the Drama? will officially arrive September 19.
