Michelle Obama Shuts Down Marriage Rumors
In the world of social media, if you don’t post it, it didn’t happen, right? Michelle Obama isn’t buying into that mindset. The former First Lady sat down with NPR’s Wild Card podcast and cleared the air about recent speculation surrounding her marriage to Barack Obama. For her, privacy isn’t a red flag at all; it’s a choice.
“The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage,” she said. “It’s like, ‘OK, so we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives.’”
For months, online chatter has questioned the state of the Obamas’ relationship, especially after Barack appeared at a LA Clippers game, President Trump’s inauguration, and former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral without Michelle. But as she explained, those decisions were intentional. “One of the major decisions I made this year [was] to stay put and not attend funerals and inaugurations and all the things that I'm supposed to attend,” she said. “Whatever the backlash was, I had to sit in it and own it. But I didn’t regret it.”
Michelle also acknowledged how her age and stage in life play into her public presence. “We are 60,” she said. “You are just not going to know what we’re doing every minute of the day, you know? And yes, I guess we’re famous, but we’re 60.”
And now, after decades of being the mom, the wife, and the face of a global brand, she’s finally focused on herself. “It’s my life now,” she said. “Now I can say that whatever I'm doing from this point on is about my ambition.”
In a world obsessed with oversharing, Michelle Obama is choosing real life over the timeline. And she’s reminding folks that absence from the feed doesn’t mean absence from love.
