JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The South African president's spokesman says Jacob Zuma is heading to Libya on a peace mission.

Zizi Kodwa said Wednesday that Zuma would meet Moammar Gadhafi on May 30 as part of African Union efforts "to help the Libyan people find a lasting solution."

Zuma led an AU mediation mission to Libya in April that failed when rebels insisted Gadhafi step down. Kodwa says Zuma has no plans to meet with rebels.

Since April, NATO has stepped up bombings that have drawn criticism from South Africa. South Africa-Libya relations are under strain. Officials accuse Gadhafi of misinforming them about the fate of a South African photographer who was killed in early April while covering fighting in Libya.

South Africa, a rotating U.N. Security Council member, supported two council resolutions calling on Gadhafi to stop attacking civilians.
