Atlanta Nurse Laid to Rest After Being Kept Alive for Months Due to Georgia’s Abortion Ban
Adriana Smith has been laid to rest after four months on life support, according to reports.
In February, a registered nurse from Atlanta was certified brain-dead while pregnant. Because Georgia has a restriction on abortion procedures, she was kept alive until her child was brought to term. Smith had an emergency C-section on June 13 and gave birth to a son, Chance. Smith died on June 17, 2025, at the age of 31.
At her celebration of life service on Saturday, June 28, at Fairfield Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga., Smith's family, friends, and onlookers mourned her.
During the funeral, which was webcast live on Facebook, several family members, including her younger sister, spoke about how much they loved Smith.
“I just wanna say that I’m thankful for the time that I spent with her, and I’m thankful for everything that she’s taught me. Smith’s sister shared her appreciation for Smith’s love, kindness, and wisdom, and she also expressed her hope that Smith will guide her in making the best decisions.
The infant is “expected to be okay," Smith’s mother, April Newkirk shared with 11Alive around the time of the birth. "He's just fighting. We just want prayers for him. Just keep praying for him. He's here now."
The case enraptured the nation, with many sharing their outrage about the murkiness of the law.
“She’s been breathing through machines for more than 90 days,” Newkirk said before her grandson’s birth. “It’s torture for me. I see my daughter breathing, but she’s not there. And her son — I bring him to see her.”
Despite the baby’s fair condition, the family shared their grief.
“My daughter should be burying me,” Newkirk told 11Alive. “If I could say one more thing to her, I guess I would tell her that I love her and that she was a great daughter."
