Howard University Hires Black Woman for Football Program

Pettyjohn will join Howard University as assistant director of football operations and director of on-campus recruiting

After only graduating just one year ago from Howard’s Sports Medicine Residency program, 22-year-old Janice Pettyjohn becomes the assistant director of football operations while also being the director of on-campus recruiting.

According to Burlington County Times, Pettyjohn said, “I’m super grateful for this position…Being 22 years old and getting a full-time position at Howard fresh out of college—it’s rare. Coach (Larry) Scott really saw the potential in me.”

In undergrad, they offered Pettyjohn the positions of graphic designer and equipment manager under the former head coach, Mike London. In addition, she is no stranger to managing teams and, as a result, had the Howard position specifically developed around her talents.

“I started managing the basketball team in seventh grade, then I did it in eighth grade and it ended up just becoming something that I loved without realizing that I love because it just became second nature,” she said.
